Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 7 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash; one was younger than age 21.
South Hilo and Puna officers arrested six drivers in each district while Kona officers arrested five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Meanwhile, South Kohala officers arrested four drivers and North Kohala officers one.
So far this year, there have been 235 DUI arrests compared with 251 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 147 major accidents so far this year compared with 151 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, nine fatalities had been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2021, five people had died.
